September 8, 2011 will be an important milestone in fantasy football. Yes, it will be the opening day of the BFL. Of course, it will be the beginning of that sixteen week fight to the mountain top that is the Kibble Bowl Championship. But, most importantly, it is the start of our fifth year as a league. In honor of our fifth anniversary, stay tuned throughout the season for some flashbacks from our inaugural season.
After an interesting season last year, with former top teams ending up at the bottom of the heap and wildcard teams winning the top spots, expect the 2011 season to be another unpredictable one.
Preview:
Every BFL season, there is a team or two that drafts that one polarizing player that makes that team the team to watch. This season that team may just be the Bad Ass Weazels who managed to draft marquee RB Chris Johnson who only recently signed a new contract with the Titans the day after our draft. The Weazels will face the running game of the Lancelot Links and their marquee RB Adrian Peterson. Interestingly enough, NFL.com's Madden NFL 12 guru is predicting that Johnson will score 2 more points than Peterson, despite the fact that Titans coach Mike Munchak has said that he will keep an eye on the number of carries they give Johnson.
Can last season's 12th place team take down the 1st place team. Madden seems to think so. Of course, all eyes will be on the Cheesesteaks passing game with BFL record holding QB Michael Vick. The Dabalalas fell hard last season after winning the championship two years in a row. You can bet that coach Jim will reach into his bag of tricks to make it back to the top of the league.
Not only does week 1 in the BFL mean that fantasy football has begun, but it also means the "Battle of the Bedroom!" The Mighty Long Dogs face their cross-house rivals the Killer Bunnies. The Dogs had a great rookie season last year, finishing in 4th place. It looks like the Long Dogs are having to deal with injuries early on, as QB Peyton Manning is not expected to play this week. It remains to be seen how Dogs backup QB Kevin Kolb does in his new home in Arizona.
Perennial playoff team the Pandemic of Love hosts 2011 runner up the Dancers. As always the Love's front office has been hard at work early on with four transactions before the season has even started. As of this posting, it looks like both teams are expected to put up most of their points by air.
BFL originals the ic chargers and the DaBruDoggies face off in Woof Stadium. Much like the Dabalalas, the Doggies will be fighting this season to make it back to the upper half of the league. As of this posting, the chargers may have receiver problems this week. Colts WR Austin Collie won't have QB Manning to throw him the ball and backup WR Anthony Armstrong looks to be at the bottom of the Redskins WR core.
The Love Supremes have the distinction of being the only team in BFL history to be the lone rookie, and they have quite the ladder to climb. Their first rung is the Romosexual Tendencies. The Romos had an interesting draft with a barrel full of WR's and no TE. A strategy? Some in the BFL seem to think so. They have since dipped into the player pool to remedy their TE vacancy. Speaking of TE's, the Supremes may have an issue in that Redskin Chris Cooley is expected to be a day of decision due to a knee injury that kept him out of the preseason.
Good luck all! See you next edition.
